Emma and I volunteered ourselves to help with Grand Designs Live in Sydney. There were many others though supporting us behind the scenes to get this up and possible to do. A huge thank you guys-we could not have done this without you!!<br />
<br />
We all have immense faith in the philosophy, setup and appeal of the Centre and feel invigorated by the new ownership of over 4 months ago. So it was natural for us to want to spread the word with enthusiasm and pride. We hope now many more people can be lucky enough to find us and see what we're about--namely the respectful and creative use of past treasures both large and small.<br />
<br />
Thank you Lyn for my colourful bunch of gerberas. I found the tidiest spot in the house for them (believe me it was hard!) and they have cheered me up for many days now!<br />
<br />
I took photos with flash and without and I actually like the without flash ones better. They have been lightened but I think they still evoke a slightly mysterious feel.<br />
<br />
I am a collector of all things green and this area is part of my Australiana collection. I love the Depression green painted chest--it's heavy duty and very practical in the lounge room. There is also a green Barsony Flamenco dancer lamp which you may recognise from a previous post. The vase the flowers are in is 1930s Melrose pottery with wonderful moulded gumnuts decoration. Melrose is one of my favourite Australian pottery makers and gumleaves and nuts are one of my favourite Australian motifs on things.<br />

I always enjoy the positive feel of the Canberra crowd--they are fun, relaxed, courteous and really adore their vintage! There are not as many outlets in Canberra for either buying and wearing vintage so many feel they can come to this fair and soak it up. The wonderful displays that Fiona and Keith do are also a major attraction. This time it focussed on the Titanic era and clothing/accessories worn at that time.<br />
<br />
I have to say though in great admiration again, the young crowd don't fear the wrath of conformity and wear vintage in the bold exuberance that comes with this "can-do/will-do" time in your life--I hope they continue on this path through their years.<br />
<br />
Below are photos of a young girl in year 10 who came with her friends all dressed creatively in vintage. Mixing eras and styles is their trick that brings their look into an ethereal timeless space. This outfit shows a 50s straight skirt, a 70s paisley oversize blouse, 70s tie, black socks with 90s Docs. The bright red headband and lipstick focus her pretty face and the look has pizazz as well as an element of country prep. I can't get enough of this girl's look! <br />

Another successful event.This past weekend <a href="http://mitchellroad.wordpress.com/">Mitchell Road Antique & Design Centre</a> were fortunate enough to secure a display space at the very first Grand Designs Live Australia expo. Emma and I were kept busy talking to people all day and night Friday, and all day Saturday & Sunday. We were both not only impressed and pleased with the immense and positive response from the public to Grand Designs, but particularly excited by the same positive public response to our display and to the Antique and Design Centre.<br />
<br />

</div>Mitchell Road is a massive warehouse space that sells iconic and useful items that fit into the theme of Grand Designs--ie making YOUR personal space grand and unique whilst remaining mindful of excessive use of new resources.<br />
Below is a handsome 60s era Chiswell brand sideboard with glass shelf display full of art glass, cats and bulls, and pottery.<br />

Thousands of people were able to see what the Antique and Design Centre stands for, namely prolonging the life of the myriad of amazing items from the past and giving them a new, stylish and respectful future.<br />
They were also able to pick up an information leaflet with vouchers for 15% off their next purchase and a free coffee and cake at the weekend coffee shop.<br />
Below is one of the ever popular Barsony red flamenco dancer lady lamp with original 50s shade. I am always proud to say these stylish world renowned lamps were made by an Australian (George Barsony). The Tretchikoff print is another iconic and stylish 60s decor item in great demand.<br />
<br />

Maps and map items are increasing in popularity. These look fabulous both in an industrial theme or a general retro one.<br />

We also used the opportunity to meet some lovely new people in similar areas. <a href="http://www.jasonmowen.com/">Jason Mowen</a> sources incredibly stylish, unique and beautiful vintage and art items to give you a choice for your decor that you know will not be replicated. <a href="http://www.oldschoolindustries.com.au/">Old School Industries</a> completely revamps old unloved discarded pieces of furniture into sensational decor.<br />

Emma and I were lucky enough at the end to get a photo taken with the main man himself--Kevin McCloud! ---which I won't share with you due to it not turning out as great as I was hoping! <br />
<br />
However our prize taxidermy rooster sure turned out great as he watched over the packing up!<br />

It has been enthusiastically taken over by another organiser and the results of their prolific advertising was seen in the greater numbers of people at the fair. <br />
<br />
As usual it was exciting and inspirational seeing the lengths people will go to to dress in vintage--by this I don't necessarily mean perfect era replication although these are amazing as well, but there are so many others who are creative on another level--whether it is quirky and over the top or simply mixing it up with modern clothing.<br />
<br />
Here is a picture of Dee. She is famous throughout all the Sydney vintage markets and fairs and her creativity and boldness is second to none. She is a fabric dye specialist and uses this knowledge to work magic with the many things she buys. Her eye for the different never to be used as is, is mind blowing!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSW5jZ4HIrgIOONNpGeYBrzRbgvFundFNGNakLMGU7T4NJCRP3UngI1w9tEigsjOhYpKDNJIT5kxvygTCHlGOaOJPGeFmIVXyGXkBQej3bpjv4BT0HqaZpc0kdhTRjTeV6aGstubPU3N8/s1600/DSCN3576.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSW5jZ4HIrgIOONNpGeYBrzRbgvFundFNGNakLMGU7T4NJCRP3UngI1w9tEigsjOhYpKDNJIT5kxvygTCHlGOaOJPGeFmIVXyGXkBQej3bpjv4BT0HqaZpc0kdhTRjTeV6aGstubPU3N8/s640/DSCN3576.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><br />
I am also always especially amazed at the youngest generation and their boldness and good taste they have with vintage.<br />
I was fortunate enough to have a representative of this enthusiastic younger generation as a helper for Friday night and Saturday. At 16 years of age this young girl impressed me with her keenness about vintage and her excellent taste in dress. She managed to wear 1980s with great style and individuality for herself. She was fantastic with customers--ever helpful and courteous. I felt very lucky.<br />
Here is a picture of Sofia.<br />

Well, I never thought that graffiti was ever a great thing but I have to say when Lyn Richardson, the owner of Mitchell Road Antique and Design Centre, put it to us that that was what she wanted to do for the famous yellow walls of the place, I thought, why not! It's eye catching, colourful, bold and certainly reflects the philosophy of the place that we are not your usual antique centre, nor if you shop here will you be the same old person when you walk out!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuuSv8o6NlpjQGG5VA4JZjzmEWXXOeBqLqBA1yYmHu5hVOESaO-FtV8LOi_qgf88Z0Ya0QGHa5-fnumtYD4sxs0LEEX1F8MuJfITgb_TG6_hM-xrDqtb_p_YFU0qUu4vzG8tPXKSsyit8/s1600/PA040009.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuuSv8o6NlpjQGG5VA4JZjzmEWXXOeBqLqBA1yYmHu5hVOESaO-FtV8LOi_qgf88Z0Ya0QGHa5-fnumtYD4sxs0LEEX1F8MuJfITgb_TG6_hM-xrDqtb_p_YFU0qUu4vzG8tPXKSsyit8/s400/PA040009.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuuSv8o6NlpjQGG5VA4JZjzmEWXXOeBqLqBA1yYmHu5hVOESaO-FtV8LOi_qgf88Z0Ya0QGHa5-fnumtYD4sxs0LEEX1F8MuJfITgb_TG6_hM-xrDqtb_p_YFU0qUu4vzG8tPXKSsyit8/s1600/PA040009.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> <br />
We were fortunate to hire Dean who took a painstaking 5 days on the job and had to deal with rain and wind to get it finished--yes, Sydney has been wet and cold for the middle of spring!<br />
<br />
The result I think looks fabulous, although the pinup girl's mouth area can look distorted as you drive towards it along Mitchell Road as it's painted on a small backward ledge. What do you all think? <br />
<br />
Anyway, here's hoping this will attract more people to the place that is Sydney's best kept secret...... .....thus far!!<br />

You might already be familiar with them as they were part of the team prior to the place closing about 2 months ago. </div><div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Just reopened 2 weekends ago, they are eager for your business whether you are a hobby or serious vendor or buyer. They are on the corner of Mitchell Road and Fountain Street in the big yellow brick building, <b>downstairs</b> in the same building as the much loved Mitchell Road Antique and Design Centre. Both spaces complement one another with the Auctions selling items mostly as is and the Centre selling mostly refurbished items.</div><div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The auction house sells anything that works for your home, office, outdoors, leisure and hobbies. Items are sold with a price tag off the floor and are to be taken away that day. There is a delivery service if you need. Auctions are also planned as a weekly event starting up very soon! The ever popular bikes are back for sale as well. Sydney is having a boom in bike sales as many take to this environmentally friendly mode of transport. Second hand is even better eco wise. </div><div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">When you first get there you need to register at the office first where Bec will give you a vendor or buyer number. All payment types are taken.</div><div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Hopefully you will notice how much more organised, cleaner and neater the place is. The crew are also keen to keep items of a better quality only for sale, so anything they deem beyond repair and use will be politely rejected. </div><div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The other exciting development is that there is an art gallery planned for downstairs. Walls are already up for hanging space and with Rex Turnbull being the artist in residence we know there will be some interesting pieces available for your wall decor very soon!</div><div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Yes, I do love bags--if only I could use every one I loved. Then again collecting them for a display is also great. Bags can do so much--there are so many styles--the sky really is the limit with bags. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I think travel /overnight bags are underutilised. How often do you just grab a crappy uninviting plastic supermarket bag to put your things in? You're all dressed up but you have a grey supermarket bag to accessorise with. That's just yuk--but everyone does it. Well, having a range of smaller to medium size travel bags makes them useful for every day. Casual, dressed up, or just for the office--you can have a different one for each style of outfit to put those bananas and lunch pack in or pack the gym gear into, that doesn't look too rough-nut sporty.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">These are the latest travel/overnight bags I have taken in for sale to Mitchell Road Antiques and Design Centre in Alexandria in Sydney's inner west. They're useful, look good feel good bags that add attention grabbing wow factor to your presence. And all my bags are in excellent to very good condition and have been thoroughly cleaned and conditioned so you can grab and use them straight away! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3WRIyBFGYz-S6iegTdO3e6i0UqmFB-MomQQAfHNBqk0nv_p_QOdzxItD_-6bMyvU8-q-bdKp7SlhAbvnOPuSK7lfjJKpzjsHN_QeKoUKwNvB94mVm6VZk_nknFVZ5riF1WF67qWrWGPw/s1600/P9060006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3WRIyBFGYz-S6iegTdO3e6i0UqmFB-MomQQAfHNBqk0nv_p_QOdzxItD_-6bMyvU8-q-bdKp7SlhAbvnOPuSK7lfjJKpzjsHN_QeKoUKwNvB94mVm6VZk_nknFVZ5riF1WF67qWrWGPw/s400/P9060006.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><u>From left to right, top to bottom row:</u></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">1. An English vintage 60s sports bag in burgundy vinyl focusing on the soccer thing. Soccer is forever growing in popularity here so grab into that trend and go with it but not in the overtly modern merchandising way. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">2. A super large tan raw leather travel bag. Has all the right vintage boho characteristics going for it--amazing patina, buckles, pockets and lining in great condition. Hard to find these days in the thick quality yet relaxed leather that this bag is made of.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">3. A timeless looking black strong hide leather backpack bag. From the 90s, this style was used frequently and frankly I'm not sure why they ever faded in popularity. They are coming back in now and this one you can't go wrong with. It has a brilliant side zip entry and a great rounded stable base. But the most brilliant thing is the backstraps zip up and undo. This is so you can easily carry the backpack as a shoulder bag--from market practicality to Nan and Pops anniversary party.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">4. The iconic Qantas burgundy vinyl cabin travel bag from the 60s. Hand made in Australia, they were really well made to last through all your rough travel needs. I once met the daughter and granddaughter of the gentleman who owned the company that made the bags. It was really sweet to talk to them. They were collecting for him all the different types he made. These bags were given away free with your ticket, when travelling with Qantas was really appreciated by the company. These are as much collectors items as they are useful retro Indie look accessories. Qantas is changing as we speak/write and these are all the more collectible now.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">5. Soft yet strong black leather travel/overnight bag. Just the right size, easy to carry, looks smart and has many handy zip up pockets. This sort of quality leather is expensive to buy new. It is so tactile and will never go out of style.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">6. A fabric floral tapestry doctors style bag from the 80s. It has a hard frame and sturdy base but the softness of the fabric makes it slouch slightly in that appealing Bohemian way. The colours are still vibrant and it will work dressed up or down. Tapestry has an eternal appeal--it worked in Victorian times as well as now that the fashion world trends for it.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><b> Below</b> is a sample of the many bags you will find at Mitchell Road in Alexandria Sydney. These are vinyl bucket bags that were popular in the 60s and a cute red suitcase that can be used for sooo many things. Very mod, very practical and you simply cannot get vinyl and compressed cardboard in the quality it was back then. Come and check them out for yourself--I bet you will fall in love with them!<br />

So just recently upon new ownership it was decided that some clearing out was needed to make more room for more great offerings to the public. So Colin, Ben, Emma, Nick, Lyn, Brett and myself spent a few late nights working towards this. Besides days of clearing out good and bad junk, walls, doors and lino floors were taken out, ceilings repaired and the change room moved. Result is a large very rustic space for a new seller. Nick (another one!--we have 3) sells varied retro and rustic pieces at very good prices. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The stairwell is also in the process of getting a new paint job--black, red and white to match the foyer. Lots of cutting in and only volunteer labour after the hours of 5pm makes it a little slow but the end result is starting to show. The stair risers still need red paint and the higher parts need the famous Fil to complete those out of reach places.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Hope you all like the result.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

However! it's still the same great space it always was, although one could say it's much better now with new things happening every day. We are all very excited by the freedom we have now to do what's best for the Centre and its customers.<br /><br />Apart from another generous feature of our items on Channel Nine "Top Design" show last Wed night, we have been moving furniture around, cleaning the kitchen area, toilets, scrubbing foyers, removing mountains of rubbish, paper and glass, and painting. Walls have also been taken out to create more stallholder space.<br /><br />Our freshly painted building now sports a new red sign signalling to all the regulars that upstairs is open despite what previous wall graffiti may have said.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNUHXdW-rLpxcAgwNfjVLhkO9nQgxEeDciGjeI9x3QG6ielIRbPaTaHi0O_mzkWoFO6qxRJ_kyKJMgc2QWrEhtcZpGBBRMnRDfvHiWpFoAWaRLdUHDLYJbH_TRSB2yWddtncdRRUsjL7c/s1600/P7260003.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNUHXdW-rLpxcAgwNfjVLhkO9nQgxEeDciGjeI9x3QG6ielIRbPaTaHi0O_mzkWoFO6qxRJ_kyKJMgc2QWrEhtcZpGBBRMnRDfvHiWpFoAWaRLdUHDLYJbH_TRSB2yWddtncdRRUsjL7c/s400/P7260003.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635742880879242578" border="0" /></a>Filip is our master of art lighting. That's just over a week away!! So not long to wait really.<br /><br />It will reopen with a name change to "MITCHELL ROAD ANTIQUE AND DESIGN CENTRE". It will still be the great old edgy warehouse space brimming full of amazing inspiring things but will be bigger and better as time goes on. Plans are for extra stallholder spaces, greater ease of service, new paint jobs and reinvigorating some areas. Oh, and maybe even a coffee space soon---crossing fingers here!<br /><br />Our service as always will stay down to earth and helpful.<br />We have:-<br />* payment via cash, EFT, Credit Card including American Express<br />* 4 week lay by<br />* 24 hour hold<br />* gift vouchers<br />* a stylist's hire service that is very popular.<br /><br />Don't hesitate to ask for help though--it's easy to be overwhelmed in such a huge space of amazing items. Stallholders are often there topping up and reorganising so you can have a chat to them too.<br /><br />At present some of our items are featured on Australia's new TV reality show, TOP DESIGN, running on Channel Nine at present Wednesday nights at 8pm, with the fabulous Jamie Durie as host. The link to the website states the place is closing--this is the Auction Centre being referred to, NOT the upstairs Antique and Design Gallery. It was a thrill to meet a fashion blogger whose blog manages to score interviews with some great designers.<br />Called sneaky peek blog--it's an interesting read.<br /><a href="http://www.sneakypeekblog.com/">http://www.sneakypeekblog.com/</a><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">My highlight:</span>--selling a red pair of All Stars in a size 13 to a male vintage lover who was thrilled with them--his shoes size says it all!<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">I love old shoes.</span><br />I love all the shoes I sell--they have character, they have the wisdom of age, they are a snapshot in time, and finding the right person for the shoes is as joyous as finding the shoes. I love seeing who buys what shoes--what their style is--how they think about things.<br /><br />Shoes take us places, they protect our feet, they make us comfortable--But they can also transform our image. From such a small item comes such a large effect. A look can be completely changed by a shoe. Same as a hairstyle and glasses. I often am intrigued how something so little can have such a transforming effect.<br /><br />I love old leather shoes especially. I love practical sturdy good looking shoes. If they can have a slight bit of quirk or interest all the better. New shoes often disappoint me. Vintage shoes are usually made better. The shoes moved with your feet. So many shoes now--they look stiff and with a mind of their own. People often look awkward in them like they are fighting with the shoe--like the shoes are to just sit on your foot as an ornament.-- a sculpture or decoration--not real. They seem to compromise on this and that--the style is way out you wear them out to a formal occasion only to have the heel fall off. How often have I seen this!<br /><br />.....This is why vintage shoes and boots are a real treasure. But also why I was thrilled to find at the market, shoes that are made with excellent quality natural materials yet had an appealing modernity to them. They are made in Argentina--the home of great leather and artisan shoemakers.<br /><br />So here are some shoes I had for sale--still for sale in fact....<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinfMHBIs6b7R_d8tYncs3ShfE6oTtCaQt2ttrde1b5H7yS-8IILFwWlOzqGlftBmGYhTtIKPkUUzKpHhXapyifi838LvUPCv8h6NEguyhl5O_pf6Pyklv9OBRZw-3BCS2fqe6seE_3aaQ/s1600/P1010003.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 297px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinfMHBIs6b7R_d8tYncs3ShfE6oTtCaQt2ttrde1b5H7yS-8IILFwWlOzqGlftBmGYhTtIKPkUUzKpHhXapyifi838LvUPCv8h6NEguyhl5O_pf6Pyklv9OBRZw-3BCS2fqe6seE_3aaQ/s400/P1010003.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5545625429189656386" border="0" /></a><span style="font-weight: bold;">From left to right:</span> 40s grey suede and brown leather trim peep toe wedges, 80s/90s light camel nubuck leather longline lace up brogues with a flared wooden heel, 90s snakeskin pattern leather squared toe ankle boots.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcrZASW_NbrjK_zEO2TJipb1vFLNnFq_Vu9dJ3TcdUWkrKiXM-qOp7PDVmYMvdqB7k2KYDrt3qAROruYN1Rj31P1ZkKrwrRAT-Yeu3rjc_BTqdBa1ImKwiPGs8cZs28oAc8A5ASPb8eQw/s1600/P1010011.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 314px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcrZASW_NbrjK_zEO2TJipb1vFLNnFq_Vu9dJ3TcdUWkrKiXM-qOp7PDVmYMvdqB7k2KYDrt3qAROruYN1Rj31P1ZkKrwrRAT-Yeu3rjc_BTqdBa1ImKwiPGs8cZs28oAc8A5ASPb8eQw/s400/P1010011.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5545625433914041570" border="0" /></a>These are circa 40s/50s bowling shoes in a perforated brogue style with wing tip and suede inserts. Their shoes smell beautiful--on real leather, yes!, they are soft and supple yet strong, they are modern in the gladiator style, yet hint at Argentina as well. They use other wonderful natural materials such as canvas and cork and the leather insoles are not coated with synthetic so absorb your sweat readily. Josefina was ready to chat warmly about her gorgeous imports.<br /><a href="http://www.carajoonline.com/">http://www.carajoonline.com/</a><br /><br />The next vintage fair I will be at is at Marrickville Town Hall on the 10th, 11th and 12th December--just in time for buying Christmas and New Year outfits and that unusual gift!Liz Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05980027290367001035noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7006517828440043703.post-63734043084152380562010-11-25T15:28:00.000-08:002010-11-25T20:48:41.875-08:00Vintage frog inspirationI LOVE frogs...so this was a happy moment this morning...<br />....as I was getting ready for tomorrows Canberra Fash n Treasure market, what creature was cosily sitting inside this old umbrella? Yep! A cute, one can only call it taupe colour, frog. I love the colouring and how it blends with the subtle earthy colours and traditional design of the umbrella. Don't you love the yellow irregular spots on black markings down the side of its legs?<br /><br />Great naturally occurring colours like this is what inspires me to look for appealing pieces of vintage. I find that pieces from the depression era, say the 20s and 30s-40s used this sort of colouring with splashes of bright here and there. The bright was never lairy though--but ever so slightly subdued...just as in the umbrella.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvg7CpEDcXMMy394PtbP9x-eKEG10EwG6fepEWs1-1KX6kONUlNOh0Ead8IHubwRRTlLx7ZaszcXcjPm7OQdwsovKSOO1p4JlEZMVxEDORcnOwd6sRkTioe1rvO3aFCY24HTKL0osAVZw/s1600/P1010012.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvg7CpEDcXMMy394PtbP9x-eKEG10EwG6fepEWs1-1KX6kONUlNOh0Ead8IHubwRRTlLx7ZaszcXcjPm7OQdwsovKSOO1p4JlEZMVxEDORcnOwd6sRkTioe1rvO3aFCY24HTKL0osAVZw/s400/P1010012.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5543640192211404706" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguXmNPF_Jwff1lAyhIyFVBd6L1hdxwono8tGVyKO8joGDOnN4hWVK1N4zPFOSanwkDpof7ZM2qxIb-q_k95zn3wf-wPbZEBeTd4m_si7hG0_OeD-QlZcXrI8ul_Ww337tv_Nxs8_2NvPE/s1600/P1010009.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguXmNPF_Jwff1lAyhIyFVBd6L1hdxwono8tGVyKO8joGDOnN4hWVK1N4zPFOSanwkDpof7ZM2qxIb-q_k95zn3wf-wPbZEBeTd4m_si7hG0_OeD-QlZcXrI8ul_Ww337tv_Nxs8_2NvPE/s400/P1010009.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5543666116339270802" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicELbX2AIKzUupJAU-xCI7gem9IK3XvT_6JCpK0XPlFcUaAAvoMB1k4Jsp8mOTvBd5ycEG47LaCVsG8qjXvyX_fDxp77rPtsCruBPGK7OMARQGa_LXleUaoApE52L6bozHsj7vhxblKdw/s1600/P1010011.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 306px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicELbX2AIKzUupJAU-xCI7gem9IK3XvT_6JCpK0XPlFcUaAAvoMB1k4Jsp8mOTvBd5ycEG47LaCVsG8qjXvyX_fDxp77rPtsCruBPGK7OMARQGa_LXleUaoApE52L6bozHsj7vhxblKdw/s400/P1010011.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5543640238118066466" border="0" /></a><br />We have lots of frogs here and with so much rain this past season they are breeding happily.<br />Below are some other frog photos from our place.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ-CB4cPOaPLXlCtaxzXiDHOqVNF4G9XesSH3TWGeelHZ9nWTcS7blWu_IgkHGYGoinRSmz8SfL9glgULx0KzX5cJ1oSCL6VGKXBnA4wd3d4K2RtQjZzx0NX8vKESTOdb_5wka6N3UxRw/s1600/P1010035.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ-CB4cPOaPLXlCtaxzXiDHOqVNF4G9XesSH3TWGeelHZ9nWTcS7blWu_IgkHGYGoinRSmz8SfL9glgULx0KzX5cJ1oSCL6VGKXBnA4wd3d4K2RtQjZzx0NX8vKESTOdb_5wka6N3UxRw/s400/P1010035.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5543640262021557170" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe28sHyOVNNDgZ1Jc9cspE6QJXeqd3nObhggMvSdCajnPoEplwXwVQXzSxuj1MKP9yS2FG1GsAkmxX1rpPT4h_npQbQrNJ0p-Nq_0bh5oXX0DOcDsp2H5oLOpYe4ukpLJObjhE3PwGYik/s1600/P1010017.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe28sHyOVNNDgZ1Jc9cspE6QJXeqd3nObhggMvSdCajnPoEplwXwVQXzSxuj1MKP9yS2FG1GsAkmxX1rpPT4h_npQbQrNJ0p-Nq_0bh5oXX0DOcDsp2H5oLOpYe4ukpLJObjhE3PwGYik/s400/P1010017.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5543640277288225426" border="0" /></a>Anyway--if you're in Canberra come on over to the Fash n Treasure market at the OLD BUS DEPOT tomorrow ie Saturday 27th November. Geoff, the owner is prolific and artistic and who knows what he'll think up next. To celebrate Melbourne Cup week and racing season he painted on some race horses. It was so clever really--the further away you went the more realistic they looked.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNC6ucT1LCakf3ihQkX2nK1weakqOmnN6q-G5CgXq8TRjnTHw0QKf-iWDtWOZiqIOvHaQBRfJIR0Eqs1pGEUd2WgaUFywp1VtFGpU5znC8oQ00tLd_mYJnvBE3afR7yBSTgqU_PykP_6E/s1600/P1010024.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNC6ucT1LCakf3ihQkX2nK1weakqOmnN6q-G5CgXq8TRjnTHw0QKf-iWDtWOZiqIOvHaQBRfJIR0Eqs1pGEUd2WgaUFywp1VtFGpU5znC8oQ00tLd_mYJnvBE3afR7yBSTgqU_PykP_6E/s400/P1010024.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5540464587564220514" border="0" /></a><br />The brand colour of Mitchell Road Auctions and Design Gallery has always been yellow--yes, it is bright, but no going back now as it's known as the "big yellow brick building in Alexandra". So the new paintwork had to be yellow again--this time slightly more intense. Those window cells were blocked off anyway, so Filip, our amazing steampunk craftsman, organised for large photo prints of inside views to be pasted onto the outside. These can be replaced with new photos when they wear out.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJcxE9kwkkwNuqiehvdoaMzAd3h33cUAahg8mh5dbFpPOb9y0MHNPi-XWVGSNdKneiE9KHEl3oAXF7GOKQdc_2-ZzjpDg7A7jYpHzF6Gr8qB-lvIK9LkXzaQawDw99mz_fLhUt97m9afA/s1600/P1010035.JPG"><br /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQmeQ4DTodWqno12ZjTK9ECYnseBy_u51PlmWANAHMWpE_M-zjJpo6qTtMt4k1arPr7HJJX2uYJ3v8pQzigku6ybGiINi9di7NffejUiwxWyoybIH6Ct-NQ4WXKYbQg5i5n6Mr74e7JwQ/s1600/P1010033.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQmeQ4DTodWqno12ZjTK9ECYnseBy_u51PlmWANAHMWpE_M-zjJpo6qTtMt4k1arPr7HJJX2uYJ3v8pQzigku6ybGiINi9di7NffejUiwxWyoybIH6Ct-NQ4WXKYbQg5i5n6Mr74e7JwQ/s400/P1010033.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5540464584053312226" border="0" /></a>AND...being the 4th Birthday we need to share the joy with the public so there has been 10-50% off just about all items in the Gallery from last weekend. This is mainly due to my being new to this facet of blogging but also because if I'm busy with customers I can't drop them and devote time to hobby photography.<br /><br />This time however I knew I had to do it--everything was right--my partner was there to help, I had been serving this group of slightly boho dressed people and had time to take note of their dressing. I have to confess I am a wannabe hippy and the 70s bohemian/folk/ethnic/tribal style of dress has always been my love and I often have elements of this style in my own dressing. So this girl impressed me immediately.<br /><br />Sophie is 15. When I heard this I was amazed. I still don't have the dare and confidence to dress with such eager difference and natural taste. And when it comes to mismatched matching well I think she has done it extremely well. She told me she doesn't try too hard--just whatever takes her fancy at the time--and she does wear different styles also....obviously a natural.<br /><br />Here Sophie wears all thrifted pieces--batik floral harem pants, 2-tone teal and brown brocade fitted jacket, fabric moccasins, a pop of colour with a royal blue longline t-shirt and to tie it in, a blue and white striped tie--no pun intended! Her green leaf earrings echo the pattern of the brocade.<br /><br />Thanks Sophie for allowing me to stage your great look to the world.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCPJObpNENIdVOtDAslEFI1ejWOcEqiFzTuQjjJhvc4R91NdnVFpuiTNPsixs7PTZPHPVBXuJapZaXUOY3VoEfQ9QNq6E2zZoymS1oB7WnCHrMZsYJLcKx8i4JoRlTBzpDaOOv_VMcHzU/s1600/P1010052.JPG"><br /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZLozG3NUvp1h_wdkqAx7PeqiufacFfoihXCSnqtXKO9YeO5VBJqy9Lv7MXX2m6_BsjsX571AsAvsiYzVLOusD6vGPicJmMWvOw9yWQcxNv8dXzQqZfK5Un4VjLQZ2-QhdWLQOk1dWBz8/s1600/P1010053.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 314px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZLozG3NUvp1h_wdkqAx7PeqiufacFfoihXCSnqtXKO9YeO5VBJqy9Lv7MXX2m6_BsjsX571AsAvsiYzVLOusD6vGPicJmMWvOw9yWQcxNv8dXzQqZfK5Un4VjLQZ2-QhdWLQOk1dWBz8/s400/P1010053.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5539306971540830162" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdx5ZChO-a0fJQzGJehEyQbDNWBt28vQzqaCcmguBXPuABh-dUdvzDRiqRyxfvo5zWHCqNebqti9q-xVtuu_QNOrj43d75aibFXnGZTZBplwjIB9SGQ3TObhigCi_gF9iEpJVKD5AKElA/s1600/P1010048.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 271px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdx5ZChO-a0fJQzGJehEyQbDNWBt28vQzqaCcmguBXPuABh-dUdvzDRiqRyxfvo5zWHCqNebqti9q-xVtuu_QNOrj43d75aibFXnGZTZBplwjIB9SGQ3TObhigCi_gF9iEpJVKD5AKElA/s400/P1010048.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5539306976257411602" border="0" /></a>Liz Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05980027290367001035noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7006517828440043703.post-18197041163471104582010-11-13T16:59:00.000-08:002010-11-13T22:43:24.550-08:00Canberra Way We Wear Vintage Fashion Fair<span style="font-size:85%;"><a style="font-family: arial;" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzizkgFhN5ZSWPGupQO5ARxVJAiFLdob8SDRx9OtigXysUzuSWasiesGKT8xvGJX_mbj0OIzynk2ljcjOp_xx4HhCa14iPuQqaP8wSNXfeBenGt9LeH6gT7qyJrZa2XyXSVWVIvBJLJGs/s1600/P1010059.JPG"><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 255); font-weight: bold;">BETTER LATE THAN NEVER CANBERRA REPORT</span><br /></a><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">So... I'm late with this post, as Canberra's Way We Wear Fair was on last weekend. Yesterday was Paddington Vintage Fashion Market at the RSL auditorium.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">Canberra again was a hugely successful fair with thousands enjoying the beautiful Albert Hall filled with incredible vintage items. Canberra residents obviously love their vintage as they oooed and ahhed often and came dressed in vintage of all sorts. These Fairs are run by Keith and Fiona Baverstock from Victoria. They are amazing in their energy and enthusiasm, driving marathons from one state to another nearly every weekend. The WWWFairs are 2 or 3 days affairs that are on in Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Adelaide and Canberra twice a year.</span> <span style="font-family: arial;font-size:85%;" >They always have a wonderful themed display of fashion/clothing items from their extensive antique and vintage collection and Fiona gives an insightful talk about it.</span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family:arial;"><br />This is a really busy time of year for me with many big fairs close together all wanting to take advantage of the spring and summer weather and the party atmosphere. People get out more, feel better, and look better. It's also starting to get into party time, tax cheques being received (for those lucky enough), there's racing carnivals, music festivals, end of study year celebrations......</span> <span style="font-family:arial;">....which is all great. However, whilst we may have great things to go to, it's also nice to spend time shopping for an unusual item to wear or appropriate bag to take to these many events. </span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><br /><br />It's also the traditional time for what is tenderly called "spring cleaning"--gee, makes it all sound so romantic!--but I don't reckon there's much romance in an itchy nose after the lounges have been turned upside down--but .... good reason to not disturb the dust. Seriously though--there's more people house hunting, and more redecorating or changing a small item or two to make their place feel different.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">So with so much activity going on I am going to assist many by taking my items to the following places.....</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" ><br /><br />Canberra this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 5th, 6th, and 7th November, 2010.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">The Way We Wear Fair at the Albert Hall, Commonwealth Avenue, Yarralumla. I do this sometimes esp as I get to walk through this gorgeous park alongside the Library and Camden Council Chambers. This park as a guess is about 4-5 years old although parts have been added later--like the childrens' play area. I don't normally focus on kids things, as mine have grown up now, but you can't help but notice what an enchanting and intelligent play area for kids this is. It's also an aesthetically pleasing place for adults and families, with quieter more spacious areas towards the back and plenty of seating and shelter.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">What I particularly like is the focus on Australian native plants and animals and how they feature throughout the park and play area. What a great way to learn about our native species--something that has been lacking in recently past decades. We seem to know about and grow so much of other countries fauna and flora but little of our own. And as time goes on we are seeing less and less of our birds in suburbia.... (animals went a long time ago, although if you're lucky you can see a dead wallaby as part of roadkill).... and more of exotic pest species such as Indian Mynahs (which sadly are a pest throughout much of the world). We have such charming birds that I know most people adore, but seem to know little about keeping them around...councils seem to be little interested in doing their bit too. This, I get the feeling, is due to developers having the upper hand and clearing new housing land completely of native trees and shrubs that are used as food and nesting by these birds. No food, no home for breeding, no birds--think of it in the human sense and we really are selfish. There is no reason we both cannot exist together.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">So here we are with some hopefully wonderfully inspiring photos for your own garden or play area. I am so glad Camden Council were visionary in this park plan. They left tall Eucalyptus trees that have been there for many decades which hopefully will provide nesting hollows and food for birds, insects and bats. I hope they will upkeep it to do it justice.</span></span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTergVtsQmKE-96jMKgxvS9kEJia33bAprU3c9lUWJPvSjB3kXG7yCyWw9Tbwzf16V5Njl2z2s2wtEMAtY4ed6IV-UBjVMnIhXvH27nvxj0B505X-1g6VG6B43P08153Z_ouZlH56xKLs/s1600/P1010019.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTergVtsQmKE-96jMKgxvS9kEJia33bAprU3c9lUWJPvSjB3kXG7yCyWw9Tbwzf16V5Njl2z2s2wtEMAtY4ed6IV-UBjVMnIhXvH27nvxj0B505X-1g6VG6B43P08153Z_ouZlH56xKLs/s400/P1010019.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5531949099389198530" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Grevillea row, looking down to the Library and right to Narellan Town Centre.</span></span> <span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family: arial;">So nice to have this large open space next to a shopping centre.</span></span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOyH1MPH2q7Z5emsbkZVD7juxpMFYCxa_q0vmTnA6Ae8M5EMkrQ-hI1SEAwOsZ5dhiloZutGpwlqZyZ8u-zwJ03ARxkavCE38_6A9h6tI8o5st2EC-jJdwt8xjLWvO4fIa6F9NhpUnV60/s1600/P1010027.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOyH1MPH2q7Z5emsbkZVD7juxpMFYCxa_q0vmTnA6Ae8M5EMkrQ-hI1SEAwOsZ5dhiloZutGpwlqZyZ8u-zwJ03ARxkavCE38_6A9h6tI8o5st2EC-jJdwt8xjLWvO4fIa6F9NhpUnV60/s400/P1010027.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5531949102913843874" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Council chambers in the background. I have included one photo of one corner of my stall below. I managed to get a dressing area in which was a godsend. The floral fabric you can see is a 50s bedspread, and is divine. The material has flecks of shine in the weave and there are little tight frills at the joins. A friend wanted to buy it to make dresses out of and I told her she couldn't. Some things are just out of bounds for destruction IMHO.</span></span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSLC4m0AULdntWxt9tTPQTL7Q9vhZwHR3Uh2byTKHw5BCJs2kgFrbyXA1M3ehUXXJz6JxFYhUwc738GGqoO3WWFrc0ofZi-4jCJsRkBo4C3Jq3EIySpMmLj5Vzn-T8Sj1w5bObcVLkR4Y/s1600/P1010002.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 354px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSLC4m0AULdntWxt9tTPQTL7Q9vhZwHR3Uh2byTKHw5BCJs2kgFrbyXA1M3ehUXXJz6JxFYhUwc738GGqoO3WWFrc0ofZi-4jCJsRkBo4C3Jq3EIySpMmLj5Vzn-T8Sj1w5bObcVLkR4Y/s400/P1010002.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5530313573126150818" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">T</span><span style="font-family:arial;font-size:85%;">he best dressed in vintage competition was held on the Friday night. What I have found the last 10 years or so is that the non leather bags are either too stiff, too smooth and plastic feeling, and have been poorly cast. They are awful in cold weather, becoming even stiffer. The vinyl of the 50s, 60s and 70s, and even into the 80s, have a superior firmer yet pliable quality that makes them sit well, have even pattern and can be easily manipulated.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">The worst and almost depressing aspect though, is that even many of the leather bags of the last decade have decreased in quality. The leather doesn't smell like the leather of the past, doesn't feel like it and often doesn't even look like it. ... One of the most hedonistic things about leather is the smell--it is rich and unique and somehow matches the look. Warm, comforting and giving. It tells us we are all connected to the natural world in some way, that things discarded can be used, that we are tribal. And so this feeling and connection is gone for me.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">I have checked the new bags out many times--what I can deduce is a number of things. The leather now mostly comes from China where cost efficiency is demanded by designers and is very well executed by the experienced makers, so....</span><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">....the leather used is of poor quality, is thin, is not treated with the same chemicals.</span><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">This reason may be twofold--dearer cost of traditional chemical, and dangerous effects of some of the older treatments.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">So...because the leather is thin and poor quality (meaning it will wear and tear easily) it must need to be coated with a plastic like material which gives it strength. When the leather is extra thin, it is glued onto a plastic type material. Both of these aspects give the leather an unnatural look and feel. Add to that the uneven surface commonly found in the leather used, where one side can be soft even grain and another side creased and hard, and you have a poor handbag experience.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">Also what I see, is that the outside of the bag can be leather, but on the inside plastic additions are used. Cheap, thin synthetic lining is also used and is another grievance of mine--it simply feels awful.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">I have seen this issue in mainstream shops and I have seen it in designer areas--sometimes you can be lucky and somehow they get it right. And I can see also many get it sort of close--but put an older vintage bag next to them and you can immediately see the difference. Vintage bags have often stood the test of time--they last longer, wear better and mostly look better with age. The patina on an older bag can be enticing in itself--it shows warmth, and steadfastness-- it says it is your rock solid companion for ever...even if it may not be.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">Here are some great bags I have been cleaning and polishing up today to take to the Show. I took them onto the front verandah--their great earthy colours seemed to say "take us to that climber and sit us on the weathered timber for our photo shoot". </span><span style="font-family: arial;">My favourite is the little red carry case. It has so much character and feels great in your hand. It has a cute tartan lining as was common in the 50s/60s.</span></span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRbpmrI0tCsyAbfv9JfBaokkWlI6GSRddDFnvzvrM9JtuoLMf1NwuxAmnwAW_H5v5qg0neoUgsRGViJaQFbhAgtTKod0onDt-_VnSTP8MDRcVzSn_JgMo42YEZZGqG816Qv8FBq3Srp2s/s1600/P1010015.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 346px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRbpmrI0tCsyAbfv9JfBaokkWlI6GSRddDFnvzvrM9JtuoLMf1NwuxAmnwAW_H5v5qg0neoUgsRGViJaQFbhAgtTKod0onDt-_VnSTP8MDRcVzSn_JgMo42YEZZGqG816Qv8FBq3Srp2s/s400/P1010015.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5527507299919597234" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlAYw9bAJL4yUQMS7jnmAnfWpmYy13rRaSmt3a5HS82nGwP0dmZIWr3dbId2JliRkaQpJvIhINg7-cfJcOjTPcY4Cvm8wJ6aWQ7o5GJksIfM4UatuMd2Hnok-9s-KRqbvJObb9hRvLKNk/s1600/P1010025.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlAYw9bAJL4yUQMS7jnmAnfWpmYy13rRaSmt3a5HS82nGwP0dmZIWr3dbId2JliRkaQpJvIhINg7-cfJcOjTPcY4Cvm8wJ6aWQ7o5GJksIfM4UatuMd2Hnok-9s-KRqbvJObb9hRvLKNk/s400/P1010025.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5527507303182683378" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl46bgazlX8yN3aTt0jPXHp8_L3-ykGcEd0izLJgjHRYcLJG_5H1rMurAxdBqo7xs7XHtmMN9xYDaQBBBz5xOzI9RCX7eGQH9xJk7IZ94sRT1sYtyAvks0KMhyndmHwCqdy00qmK_wPu4/s1600/P1010022.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl46bgazlX8yN3aTt0jPXHp8_L3-ykGcEd0izLJgjHRYcLJG_5H1rMurAxdBqo7xs7XHtmMN9xYDaQBBBz5xOzI9RCX7eGQH9xJk7IZ94sRT1sYtyAvks0KMhyndmHwCqdy00qmK_wPu4/s400/P1010022.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5527509425286225330" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><br />The weather was overcast yet a pleasant temperature today. We have had a lot of rain over a long period of time through winter and early spring and so this is shaping up to be the best spring for our plants here for at least 20 years. Everything is a vivid green, rich lighter colour new leaves are sprouting and plants have, have had or will have wonderful flowering. The purple splash of colour to the back is a batch of Australian native Mintbushes or Prostanthera species. They are delightful in colour, flower shape and I adore the minty with a hint of lavender smell they have. Sometimes you can smell it quite a distance. They are a very under-utilised group of plants in my opinion. We love Tasmania and have visited regularly over the past 16 years. It's wilderness is like no other--you step back in time in so many places--and by that I don't mean hundreds of years or even thousands--I'm talking millions...before man. This is physical and natural history that thousands of years of human habitation has not changed into a different place. Aboriginals inhabited this land for thousands of years but did not adulterate the land the way European man has in the blink of an eyelid. I digress...<br /><br />Mt Wellington stands like a sentinel to the city of Hobart. It is both welcoming and powerful. It is majestic, sensual, everchanging, calming and embracing. This mountain makes Hobart and is like a magnet to me, and I know to many others. Once mesmerised by its beauty you cannot ever remove it from your psyche. It is inspirational, rejuvinating and enriching. The minute I saw it I was smitten.<br /><br />Below are some of many beautiful photos I took that Wednesday in Hobart and on Mt Wellington when a cold(er) snap came up from the Antarctic bringing a gale force wind to the summit area and transformative snow.<br /><br />Sometimes I wish I was a designer so I could use natures colours, patterns and textures for inspiration. Come to think of it I do use it to select out items for sale---both fashion items and decor.<br /><br /></span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKyDfjii2aoLn4QnLatYbKZ997MwIm68CmtbxtwwShQjpOcONI1c0heBgNSIAGbGHWMzTEHIUGsz2h5ds_GYcu0YMUcSIPyh04SZBD9OOQGxSwq4x360sPVJENGwZFdnUDRtUKDwupHJM/s1600/P1010111.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKyDfjii2aoLn4QnLatYbKZ997MwIm68CmtbxtwwShQjpOcONI1c0heBgNSIAGbGHWMzTEHIUGsz2h5ds_GYcu0YMUcSIPyh04SZBD9OOQGxSwq4x360sPVJENGwZFdnUDRtUKDwupHJM/s400/P1010111.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5520459384696778786" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;">The Derwent River from the Botanical Gardens entry</span>--<span style="font-size:85%;">looking south.</span> <span style="font-size:85%;">Hobart is situated on the Derwent.</span> <span style="font-size:85%;">I like the skeletal pattern of the still leafless exotic trees against the blue sky.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMcMO6EYOe2raJCPtRtJ-L-jiG-DjP3Um2zkjdK8XdJHU-BAntONC_JpKq3x2_1SqR6rzVZRUWCYQTuh0E28LCfKnp6M7eD6A32pcm7gjoQEw0_kvM1uXECdVPaZfXKIBe2WvcVULlKqA/s1600/DSCN1448.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMcMO6EYOe2raJCPtRtJ-L-jiG-DjP3Um2zkjdK8XdJHU-BAntONC_JpKq3x2_1SqR6rzVZRUWCYQTuh0E28LCfKnp6M7eD6A32pcm7gjoQEw0_kvM1uXECdVPaZfXKIBe2WvcVULlKqA/s400/DSCN1448.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5520461178870323186" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;">Mt Wellington from Queen Street Sandy Bay. The next market at Paddington is on Saturday the 10th October 2010, so put it in your diary or memory bank--it's the 2nd Saturday of the month.<br /><br />Now I would like to tell you a bit about Lisa. She is warm and friendly and always has the cutest and interesting things. All sorts of beautiful, quirky or lovingly kitsch bits n pieces can be picked up at her stall. From pretty cut glass 50s brooches to wonderful handmade true vintage quilts, from funny old shower hats to retro patterned peg bags, from funky on trend 70s denim shorts to 80s sloppy joes. Below are the shorts I have mentioned. We teemed them up with those killer red lace up ankle boots and hoped someone would buy the both or at least get inspired!<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkk4E506p3Cyf6HuPKd4qKTgAYlw4MzdtWBnSN_bfhLNw-TiY8RuC7IgdsflvaIG9D2otsOiP6xtixVyQW0DFDtqvSLcNYCrXYBjcfR3Chi98FnkvNUpSjJQ1VLb4FWrxct7iACo0i7bo/s1600/P1010085.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 360px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkk4E506p3Cyf6HuPKd4qKTgAYlw4MzdtWBnSN_bfhLNw-TiY8RuC7IgdsflvaIG9D2otsOiP6xtixVyQW0DFDtqvSLcNYCrXYBjcfR3Chi98FnkvNUpSjJQ1VLb4FWrxct7iACo0i7bo/s400/P1010085.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5518613656220126258" border="0" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCuUKMVWdcJIbv67jCa-79timjV6oyoaHWyjuTcVuDKNI2lVN8d4E3RxmNowlhqrXg6AnQZ6s6uRO9HkPbWzmk6gLqv3s-zo_TS96RzWEixSaCuREeLl52uMfGi32HS5EExEsAV6oI9UQ/s1600/P1010086.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 262px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCuUKMVWdcJIbv67jCa-79timjV6oyoaHWyjuTcVuDKNI2lVN8d4E3RxmNowlhqrXg6AnQZ6s6uRO9HkPbWzmk6gLqv3s-zo_TS96RzWEixSaCuREeLl52uMfGi32HS5EExEsAV6oI9UQ/s400/P1010086.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5518615183140710402" border="0" /></a><br />Certainly a character of the markets and fairs is Weeba. She is Indonesian and with this comes a vibrancy and get up and go many wish for. She also has a great understanding of how clothes work having being brought up with sewing and handcrafts as part of everyday living. So she can repair and rework pieces as well as sew new in the old style. She always has sought after vintage and retro dresses as well as a great selection of ankle boots and unusual leather bags. Below is a bold cherry red with black buttons 80s dress and Scandinavian pattern cardigan.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizPs036fwR0m1cIL7kYs6uUkDk0iJvNkER2d9gFLvhe7-os8d_KxCTf2prsvQaJyXe-Bv5QBckSg1ulnEkR47SXXKtP7ABOcpNaDtVUvy3_0VJ7x7WdGIHOHlHten47zSH7WBGyu6KDWo/s1600/P1010076.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizPs036fwR0m1cIL7kYs6uUkDk0iJvNkER2d9gFLvhe7-os8d_KxCTf2prsvQaJyXe-Bv5QBckSg1ulnEkR47SXXKtP7ABOcpNaDtVUvy3_0VJ7x7WdGIHOHlHten47zSH7WBGyu6KDWo/s400/P1010076.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5518613639555017330" border="0" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhALasJiQSrqsaihZLFoS_D6VrRbyQSsQSvNTmNpvf3VX9qL3R1EgvCmVA18zmnOuuHu3BC9rOzLSL2piK2sLQWJlHEC-YayQx0O_t8MzNYLEZucZ9C3pgxrkcyy4EFKNWYkc5r6j8JIp4/s1600/P1010081.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhALasJiQSrqsaihZLFoS_D6VrRbyQSsQSvNTmNpvf3VX9qL3R1EgvCmVA18zmnOuuHu3BC9rOzLSL2piK2sLQWJlHEC-YayQx0O_t8MzNYLEZucZ9C3pgxrkcyy4EFKNWYkc5r6j8JIp4/s400/P1010081.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5518613649038116994" border="0" /></a><br />Ok, here is Gabriella again. You may remember her from the last post about this market. As always she has used great genuine vintage pieces to dress up in. Going the nautical navy, white and red theme for Spring she wore a 60s shirt dress with classic stripes to the bodice and a great large cut collar. Of course what else would you teem with it but navy, red and white accessories, but I especially loved the scarf in her hair.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiasNgNbGvxPeExvny-RywDGQYttdzVe8iL2nKSrp6UxJXgJRECL-Z3llOHj0hQqFPaT1p1Zj1fgpnsZoferirazxyEDfBl2l7AlT26Dpi6iivrtgj-TB7egC4-U52VGc5eBm8CD3C_RaE/s1600/P1010065.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiasNgNbGvxPeExvny-RywDGQYttdzVe8iL2nKSrp6UxJXgJRECL-Z3llOHj0hQqFPaT1p1Zj1fgpnsZoferirazxyEDfBl2l7AlT26Dpi6iivrtgj-TB7egC4-U52VGc5eBm8CD3C_RaE/s400/P1010065.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5518634537094341026" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBY3cNsn41w4av0gLEsVdOGSvgWql-_9pnk2MVkJ83s6UMn9tH00xq2T0S65TCHfTahvNtkjHBKb9wluiflWcXmSY17TSE3dEy5axL3bZDkzRAWwL8wyBrYPbjrYVqi8cYYB5f837XIa4/s1600/P1010067.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 234px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBY3cNsn41w4av0gLEsVdOGSvgWql-_9pnk2MVkJ83s6UMn9tH00xq2T0S65TCHfTahvNtkjHBKb9wluiflWcXmSY17TSE3dEy5axL3bZDkzRAWwL8wyBrYPbjrYVqi8cYYB5f837XIa4/s400/P1010067.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5518613632485412514" border="0" /></a><br />Below are some pieces I had for sale. The funky 60's pottery lamp has come out of my green collection. I am slowly parting with a few pieces that don't fit in entirely with my more vintage rustic/industrial look I have going.<br /><br />Also out of my collection on the half mannequin was a jade green leather high sitting cap made in Japan from the 60s. And those shell and plastic bead necklaces--wow! is all I can say.<br /><br />Another piece there is the 60s/70s long sleeve slim fit limey green cotton knit tee shirt--sounds basic, but these are among the most difficult pieces to find as they were worn daily and usually became too roughed up to pass on anywhere.<br />To me it signifies the start of a more casual, practical feel to everyday dressing for women that was influenced by man style clothing. This style was also naturally accelerated by the advent of womens' liberation. With this t-shirt, jeans would have been typically worn. At first, all girls had available to buy were mens' jeans, but slowly some makers designed especially for women. This was a revelation to me, as my mother didn't have to sew the waist in every time! Mens' jeans are noticeably wider in the waist. And I didn't have to shop each time for jeans at the army disposal store--much as I loved the atmosphere in there. I revelled in this look when I was growing up. It was my staple and still is today as it is for most girls and women around the world.<br />T- shirt and jeans--that's it for a good easy going life I say!<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0sNYsvYxIy5Or4iPlyjxGQ5jyDDniAfF71OX6-7-ro0amWILFqct2LRUjrn8eC6ingJ_k02DSGgtuvs1knWvZ8YM_U11IO6QYMggsHkB3d3t2pdHeNMaqGh2Qu-92J6y2zb7Kg2n2GF0/s1600/P1010095.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0sNYsvYxIy5Or4iPlyjxGQ5jyDDniAfF71OX6-7-ro0amWILFqct2LRUjrn8eC6ingJ_k02DSGgtuvs1knWvZ8YM_U11IO6QYMggsHkB3d3t2pdHeNMaqGh2Qu-92J6y2zb7Kg2n2GF0/s400/P1010095.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5518615205585791858" border="0" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbAKBDneh-jE9L9CAXGDjoK_ZKL7Ca9hV8RH2RJylK3Z70VJFlFVsnNZS_IgB47cX576mBeom8jv7J9W9-a6pKG8FYv3HHCVJttM0FbkO6J9-_ziWey1dNzZErX20DWTabWDqlyAdImZU/s1600/P1010092.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbAKBDneh-jE9L9CAXGDjoK_ZKL7Ca9hV8RH2RJylK3Z70VJFlFVsnNZS_IgB47cX576mBeom8jv7J9W9-a6pKG8FYv3HHCVJttM0FbkO6J9-_ziWey1dNzZErX20DWTabWDqlyAdImZU/s400/P1010092.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5518615193687982978" border="0" /></a><br />Last of all I have to show you this photo of a new sellers clothing rack. She sold wonderful new old stock and vintage designer pieces. This rack was particularly eye catching with a focus on white and off white crocheted, lace and beaded pieces.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDY5txV6vXfNt9sCHuVC-pTCB8fXfhDGXCCLvgl30MeL9ehoGQXW5iAKQdOe-7GZOW6VyRWhza93abzJ4ffyRFMUafHZgLHawpgKF1zCQ6b9V_pxN2WAkwYaM00GOZZrkQ1HcfoShjMlM/s1600/P1010090.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDY5txV6vXfNt9sCHuVC-pTCB8fXfhDGXCCLvgl30MeL9ehoGQXW5iAKQdOe-7GZOW6VyRWhza93abzJ4ffyRFMUafHZgLHawpgKF1zCQ6b9V_pxN2WAkwYaM00GOZZrkQ1HcfoShjMlM/s400/P1010090.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5518615169195073250" border="0" /></a><br />My next post I will share with you some photos I'm very happy with from the snow on top of Mt Wellington in Hobart, Tasmania. My hubby and I had a short getaway there earlier this week. Even if you don't like the cold there can be no argument it does not create some of the most beautiful mesmerising landscapes.Liz Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05980027290367001035noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7006517828440043703.post-72867238516677686912010-09-16T06:52:00.000-07:002010-09-16T07:25:44.064-07:00A quick update.Well, I must apologise for not updating this blog for a long time now. My computer gave up the ghost and so working on an old slow laptop was not easy and I tended to just do the basics.<br /><br />Have bought another Mac just recently so will be ready to go again shortly as soon as I load some of my latest photos from last Saturday's Vanity Fair Vintage Fashion Market at the new venue of Paddington RSL Club.<br /><br />For the first time in a new venue, it was a good turnup. We have some new dealers as well as most of the regulars. The venue whilst more difficult to load stock to, will be warmer in winter and cooler in summer and obviously in a hub of activity in Paddo's main street, Oxford Street.<br /><br />What also has passed was the 2nd Fash n Treasure market in Canberra. It poured nonstop from buckets that day and the wind blew fiercely.... from the antarctic I think!.... no...I know.....so not really a great market day but amazingly Canberra's fashion enthused crowd came along. Packed full with sellers of all sorts, more food variety and a rugged up crowd it was still fun and great for buying and selling.<br />One great thing about the colder weather is you can make good use of those fantastic winter jumpers and coats and use layering to it's best effect--often more fashion fun that a too hot summer's day.<br /><br />I will be spending the next month reorganising a lot of my working stock and getting new stock ready for my stalls at Mitchell Road Antiques and Design Gallery, the next Paddington Vanity Fair and the famous and huge Canterbury Vintage Clothing Jewellery and Textiles Show. This last one is on at Canterbury Racecourse in Sydney in mid October, and is probably the largest vintage fashion fair in the southern hemisphere. I will be posting more about it in coming days.Liz Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05980027290367001035noreply@blogger.com2
